DOCTOR APHRA #11 COVER (STAR WARS 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT).
2017. Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

For images with a lot of specific details, I usually have a mood board filled with pics I plucked from Google Image Search. This can even include other artists, as evidenced by the the Stuart Immonen drawing of Chewbacca below (he's the best). Oh, and this variant cover hits shelves today.

All the digital sketching was done in Photoshop CC with Kyle T. Webster's Animator Pencil, while the colors were done with a variety of his painting brushes. Total working time (minus my Dad's inks) below:

digital layouts: 1.5 h
digital roughs: 4.5 h
pencils: 7 h
digital color: 5.5 h

total: 18.5 hours

New Prints for Sale

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ART PRINT. 2015.
Gouache and acrylic on illustration board with digital edits, 18 × 24″.

I've got a host of new prints available through my online store. And, starting today, I'll be adding international shipping to the mix (something I've been experimenting with behind the scenes).

Also, just a note about this painting: the artwork featured here was slightly edited in post-production to match the accompanying sculptures from Sideshow.

Star Wars 40th Anniversary Cover

DOCTOR APHRA #11 COVER (STAR WARS 40TH ANNIVERSARY VARIANT).
2017. Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

I'm slowly catching up, folks. To celebrate, here's a cover that will be on shelves next month.

A couple updates:

1. I will not be attending San Francisco Comic Con after all. My apologies!
2. I will only be at StocktonCon for 1 day, Saturday, August 19.
3. Commissions for Stockton will go up later this week. Please sign up for email updates to be notified. Time is short, so I won't be accepting fully-painted portraits, just ink & watercolor. Thanks!

My Art at SDCC (Just Not Me)

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1955 #2. 2017.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

I won't be at San Diego this year, but my art rep is already there — you can find him (and my original art) at booth #4400.

Even if you won't be in attendance yourself, you can still bid on an original page set. My Dad and I donated a Daredevil page (pictured below) to the CBLDF, details here.

DAREDEVIL #10 P. 15. 2012.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

And in case you missed it, the Syfy Channel visited my studio, interviewing me and recording the process behind a Hellboy painting. Have a great weekend!

Wacky Reference Wednesdays, No. 346

FERRO LAD. 2017. Gouache on watercolor block, 9 × 12″.

For reflective surfaces, it always helps to have good reference. And while Ferro Lad is a bit shinier than most iron, I'm assuming he's nicely polished. The 3D model below is something I sculpted in Sculptris, a free program you should all be using. Many materials (matcaps) come standard with the download, but I created this one by searching for images of shiny spheres online and making the desired adjustments. Such is my life.

Anemic? I think not!
