Hellboy '55

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1955 #3. 2017.
Ink(ed by Joe Rivera) on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

Here's the 3rd of 3 covers for Hellboy and the B.P.R.D., full details here. I've still got a couple more in the pipeline as well, plus I'm working on a Hellboy one-shot that should be out around February. In the meantime, I'm trying to get some larger sequential projects planned for next year.

NYCC was an amazing success, so thank you to everyone who stopped by and made my day/week!

NYCC 2017 (Artist Alley N28)

THE SINISTER SIXTEEN. 2017.
Gouache on illustration board, 19 × 25″.

It's almost here! The New York Comic Con begins this Thursday and I will, Odin willing, be there all 4 days. My commission list is beyond full, but I'll be happy to sign your books, prints, shields, and hammers. Autographs are free, but I'll be accepting donations for Hero Initiative.

Big news of the show (at least for me): Grey Matter Art will be debuting my limited edition print of The Sinister Sixteen. Privately commissioned in 2008(?) as a Sinister Six pin-up, I didn't start painting until 2013... and it just kept getting bigger. Now the officially licensed, limited edition print can be yours, just stop by booth 3064. (For those not going to NYCC, I will have artist proofs to sell online, but not for a while.)

SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER #4 (variant cover). 2017.
Gouache & Photoshop on bristol board, 11 × 17″.

The time has finally come: Shirtless Bear-Fighter #4 is out in the wild. Below you'll find all the reference and research that went into the painting — except, of course, the photos of my lovely wife, who refuses to acknowledge her crucial role in this debauchery.

Sorry, guys — wife said I couldn't post her pic.

I ran out of time on this painting and had to finish the rest digitally (in one flapjack-fueled all-nighter). Below is the unfinished painting. The trade dress and faux wear & tear were already prepped in Photoshop, so all I had left to do was render the details. I used Kyle T. Webster's brushes, mostly his gouache set, including my own modifications.

I contracted Manny Mederos to do the logo for me, sending him some of my favorite Men's Magazines covers for inspiration. He gave me back several to choose from and I couldn't have been happier with the result. Perhaps we should do another?

HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1955 #1. 2017.
Gouache and acrylic on bristol board, 13 × 19″.

This issue hits shelves today! (Been a while, right?) Full details at the Dark Horse site. I used the Hellboy bust I sculpted in Sculptris and lit the scene in Photoshop. I threw in some simple geometric shapes to help get a handle on the lighting situation. The DC-3/C-47 model is one I found online. I took some video of the painting process, but, knowing me, it will be years before I get around to posting it.

Guardians (of the Galaxy) for Harvey Relief

Baby Groot Remarque, ink & acrylic marker

The good folks at Mondo are hosting an auction to support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, so I gladly contributed a couple of screen prints. The regular version (red logo) has a Baby Groot, pictured above, and the variant (blue logo) features Groot.

SILVER SURFER AND TOOMIE. 2017.
Gouache on illustration board, 9 × 12″.

Using an anatomical figure I had already sculpted in Sculptris, I created a texture to mimic the reflective surface I needed. By painting a sphere (or using a photo of one) Sculptris can map the reflections to the 3D model to create a passable rendering. This eliminates the need for computing all the light trajectories in a scene. The painting itself was done in gouache on Strathmore Mixed Media Board.

Long live The King!

I think this was a photo I altered and plugged into Sculptris

Jeff Lemire & Paolo Rivera. THE VALIANT #2 PAGE 17.
2014. Photoshop, 2750 × 4175 px.

For this page of The Valiant, Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt's script called for a storybook illustration to be interspersed with the main action. This was a great opportunity for the writers (artists in their own right) to showcase their skills (and do my work for me). Jeff provided the drawings, while Matt handled colors — my part was done completely in Photoshop, primarily using KyleBrush's Rough Inker.
